Cars are a gift from god

I would like to preface this entry by saying that I drive a car. However,
I refuse to bullshit myself about the consequences of that decision.

A few days ago, I found myself killing some time at a mall, so I
wandered into a religious gift shop for entertainment. Some of you
may know that I worked at a multi-faith TV network for ten years, so
I've been exposed to more religions than one person should be
legally be allowed to endure. Not much of it makes any sense to me
in a reality-based world, but hey, if people need some fantasy to be
distracted from their own mortality, fine. I just wish they would stop
using it as an excuse to be in denial about behaviour that affects the
rest of the living things on this planet. Here's a good example:

It'sThe Driver's Prayer, printed on the backside of this laminated card.
Now as far as I know, automobiles were invented after the Holy Bible
was assembled, so I have to assume that this is not an officially-
sanctioned verse directly from the mouth of god. And if there is a
supreme being that truly gives a damn about its creation, I doubt that
it would endorse such a prayer. The first couple of verses seem
harmless enough - a plea to an omnipotent entity, seeking the skill
and attentiveness that would prevent the maiming of small children
on the sidewalk. But it was the last verse that baked my noodle:

Please make me feel this car I drive

You gave me to enjoy,

and that its purpose is to serve mankind

not to destroy.

this is a spacerxxxxxx
Amen.

By now we ought to be aware that everytime we start a car, some kid is
getting asthma, a polar bear is losing its habitat, or someone is being
maimed in Nigeria. Being responsible for any of the above doesn't seem
like Christian behaviour to me.

It's going to be very difficult for people to give up driving if they believe
that cars are a gift from god. Alternatively, they are going to be very
angry with god when god takes their gift of mobility away.

Barry

Hey Barry;

All I can say to that article is "Amen" :)

You could mention that the car you drive is a smart car...one of those super small hyper efficient cars. You are doing your part Barry, and I feel that I am too (see my Oct 21st Blog post http://kshipper.blogspot.com/ )

I walk to Tim Hortons for my morning coffee more often now and I always feel guilty when I have to drive to Timmy's because I am short on time. I hate the fact that our entire lifestyle is built around the car. Example: back to back appointments that we make that depends on the speed of a car to make it. My children get involved in sports, but the teams are travelling teams and a tournaments are located a hour or two away. This year we have one in Kingston and that is 4 hrs away! I don't think the general public cares one bit...gas prices are still around $.80 a litre and the sales of trucks rose again this year for the Big 3 on those low prices /sigh

I am under the impression that the large truck sales are do to the fact that people "feel safe" in them. Oh sure---you are safe in a Lincoln Navigator if you hit someone is a Smart Car...but those trucks are NOT safe if they hit something their size.

I'm just wondering when the sociological/environmental world will accept and be indifferent to the Catholic faith. What if Muslims had something similar? Would you so loosely mock and maim a Muslim's faith? or maybe that is taboo? I bet you call your self tolerent of all types of people. I guess you should refine that claim and add "Anti-Catholic" to your list of characteristics describing yourself.

I'm just not into accepting anyone's belief that cars are a gift from god, wars will end if we pray earnestly, and over-populating the planet is a good thing.

By the way, how insane is it for a religious organization to encourage breeding on a global scale and then ask it's members to pray for an end to resource wars and hunger?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I would, if their belief allows them to be in such denial. I despise all organized religions equally. If Catholicism is a religion, then yes, I am anti-Catholic.

> I bet you call your self tolerent of all types of people.

No, not all types. I have little tolerance for people who think that their "creator" wants them to destroy creation.

I seem to be repeating the points in my original post. Perhaps you should just go back and read it again. Then again, maybe at some level you do understand how insane this is, and you are lashing out at me in anger rather than dealing with it.

I have read your post and I consider that the message is full of aversion against the Catholic Religion, for, as you have set forth in another previous post, you are against "organized religions". It is clear to me that this position stems from ignorance and a deep denial to undertake a serious investigation as to what the faith you are attacking and mocking really is. You seem to base your opinions on casual and on-the-fly web postings and things alike, which are unsustainable considerations poked out God knows what weak minded so-called "thinkers".
The line where you sentence: "Being responsible for any of the above doesn't seem like Christian behaviour to me", is in fact a paradox if not a foolish irony. That concern you are mocking, that being responsible for the asmathic, the maimed, the whole creation is actually a Christian behavior, or at least, should be. That is the quid of the question. Christians are not behaving in a Christian way, and Protestantism has a large quota to do with it (cfr. Max Weber "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism"). As to what you call organized religion, the Catholic Church is struggling among this nightmarish chaos by trying to give back to man something of what this Age of "Enlightenment" destroyed inside, in his innermost, his heart of hearts.
What you must do to restore balance with nature is to restore balance within the human soul.
Think of it before sewing seeds of hate.

Hey Barry! I just discovered your blog and wanted to chime in here. I've owned a copy of The End of Suburbia for years and have lent it to as many of my friends as will watch it. The scary thing is that the scenarios you all presented are not far off from today's headlines.

If you'll humor me while I speak to the issue at hand. I think it's more than fair to call BS when you see this kind of nonsense. I consider myself a practioner of non-religious Christian spirituality, and I think stuff like this is a riot (and very unfortunate). I would hope, however, that you wouldn't write off those of us who have integrated protecting the environment into our spirituality. I am also not a fan of "organized religion" as you would probably think of it, but there are increasing numbers of people in these movements that believe that the Earth and its resources are something to be cherished and conserved... but I doubt any of them shop at the Christian gift shop anyway. :)
